Chapter 9

Jessica watched as Ian’s face grew red. The color crept up his neck and into his cheeks, igniting his skin even through the deep tan. “Excuse me?”

She set down her drink and cleared her throat. She’d known he wasn’t going to like it, but she hadn’t known how little until just now. Suddenly, she was glad she’d thrown down a margarita before telling him. “I’m going to interview Albert Mancini.”

He pinched the bridge of his nose and squeezed his eyes shut. When he opened them, all the humor from the last hour had vanished. He looked serious. And pissed off. “Are you fucking kidding me?”

She refused to look away even though she felt like hiding under the table. She’d be damned if she was going to let him decide who she would or wouldn’t talk to for this story. “No, I’m not. Who better to answer some of these questions than him?”

Leaning slowly forward, he set his elbows on the table and steepled his fingers. “First of all, he’ll never talk to you. His attorney will advise against it. Obviously. Second of all, he’s a fucking psychopath. You really think he’s going to clear anything up and give you the answers you’re looking for?”

She stiffened. “No need to swear, Detective.”

“Oh, I think there’s plenty of need to swear. I think there’s plenty of goddamn need to swear.”

Anger bubbled beneath Jessica’s surface. Who did he think he was? “Are you finished?”

“No, I’m not. Not by a long shot.”

The waitress reappeared with the second margarita. She set it down, looked as if she was going to say something, but made a quick retreat instead.

Ian glared across the table. In the dim light of the restaurant, his eyes looked almost black. “You know, prancing into the PD wearing that get-up you had on is one thing. Showing up at the jail like that is something else. Don’t you realize he’s fixated on you? Or did you forget what happened when I had to pull him off you?”

“I haven’t forgotten,” she bit out. “But he’s behind bars. How dangerous could it be?”

He laughed. “How dangerous could it be? The man is insane, Jessica. Do you understand what I’m telling you? Insane. He still has plenty of contacts on the outside who would jump to do his bidding for the right price. Not to mention, there’s no guarantee how long he’ll be in jail.”

Pushing away the little seed of doubt that was starting to take hold, she squared her shoulders. “He’s going to see me in court. He’ll see me eventually.”

“Holy fuck, it’s not the same! You’d be coming to him. In his mind he’ll think you want him. At the very least, you’ll be giving him something to fantasize about, and you don’t want that. Trust me.”

A lump formed in her throat, and she stubbornly swallowed it back. She couldn’t believe he was affecting her this way. Yelling at her over dinner like a disobedient teenager and reducing her to tears.

She swiped up the margarita, spilling a few drops on the table, and took a swig.
